What is the pressure in a paddleboard?
Inflatable paddle surfboardsrequire a specific inflation pressure to ensure their performance on the water isn’t compromised. That’s why—and for safety reasons—it’s so important to keep the pressure in your paddle surfboard within the manufacturer’s recommended range. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about inflating your board and how to check its pressure.
How does pressure affect paddleboarding?
In stand-up paddleboarding, the inflation pressure affects the board’s stiffness, stability, control, glide, and structural strength. Too low or too high a pressure has direct consequences for both the SUP and its performance, completely altering the experience.
When the pressure is too low:
- Stability is reduced as it deforms under the weight, continuously altering the contact surface
- It reduces its glide through the water and is less effective at transferring the forward momentum generated by the stroke
- It tends to flex more as the weight on the board increases and is less responsive to changes in the water
- It's harder to stay on course when you have limited control during turns
- Its performance deteriorates as the load increases, a phenomenon that is most noticeable on XXL paddleboardsand two-person paddleboards
On the other hand, inflating the board beyond the recommended pressure does not improve its performance in the water and compromises the board’s structural integrity. Therefore, if the pressure is too high, the stress on the materials and seams increases, raising the risk of leaks, delamination, seam failure, and even structural collapse of the paddleboard or inflatable platform.

The risk is higher with direct exposure to the sun
A rise in temperature causes the pressure inside the paddleboard to increase. This is the main reason whydirect exposure of the board to heat is not recommended. Sunlight heats the PVC, which in turn heats the air inside the board, causing the molecules to move faster and putting even greater pressure on the board’s structure.
This effect that heat has on the board is offset when you're in the water, since the water helps lower the temperature even though the sun is shining on the surface of the paddleboard. However, it never hurts to check the pressure with a pressure gauge while you're out on the water.
Once you get out of the water, it's best to place the paddleboard in the shade and check its inflation pressure from time to time . If necessary, you can reduce the pressure by pressing lightly on the valve to release some of the air inside.

What is the recommended inflation pressure for a paddleboard?
The inflation pressure of a paddleboard is measured in PSI (pounds per square inch) or bars. These two units of measurement allow you to determine the pressure range within which the paddleboard should remain to avoid negatively affecting its performance and structural integrity.
The inflation pressure for HUIIKE paddle surfboards ranges from 12 to 15 PSI, with 15 PSI being the maximum pressure for the paddle surfboard. This is also the recommended pressure for our NOOK floating platforms, while the LOOP inflatable ringsare limited to a pressure range of 8–10 PSI due to their smaller size and volume.
Within this recommended pressure range, the paddleboard performs at its best. A board with the correct inflation pressure offers:
- Increased stiffness
- Greater stability
- Less surface deformation relative to weight
- It better transfers rowing power, helping to increase forward momentum and rowing speed
- Improved glide and board control
- Reduces the risk of damage caused by excess pressure

How do you measure the inflation pressure on a paddleboard?
To measure how much a paddleboard has been inflated, you need what’s called a pressure gauge—an instrument that measures the pressure inside a closed system. This tool lets you see at a glance whether the pressure in your SUP is within the manufacturer’s recommended range, below it, or above it—which, as we’ve already seen, can be dangerous.
To do this, you’ll find the double-action manual pump—an essential accessory included with all our paddleboard and inflatable platform kits. The pump features an analogpressure gauge thatmeasures inflation pressure in a range from 0 to 29 PSI, or from 0 to 2 bar.
However, when you’re in the water and want to check the pressure in your paddleboard, you can’t use the pump. In that case, there are some very interesting alternatives. One of them is the traditional analog pressure gauge, but its size causes it to protrude too far from the board’s surface (learn more about the parts of a paddleboard), and the measurement isn’t very accurate.

How to Use a Digital Pressure Gauge
To use the digital pressure gauge, simply connect it to the valve on your paddleboard. The kit includes 5 gaskets. Place the orange gasket—reserved for HUIIKE products—on the pressure gauge. Remove the valve cap and attach the pressure gauge. To secure it, press down on the device and screw it on until it is firmly in place. We recommend tying the original cord from the valve cap (which you’ll need to cut) to the cord included with the pressure gauge.
Checking the pressure of a paddleboard is very easy with the digital pressure gauge. Just press the red button, and the pressure reading will appear on the digital display for 20 seconds. It’s water-resistant (but not submersible) and includes a 100 mAh lithium-ion battery, rechargeable via sunlight, which allows you to measure the board’s pressure up to 3,600 times on a single charge.
