how much does a paddle surf board weigh

Among all the paddle surfboards out there, finding the model that best suits you is a matter of patience. You must take into account different aspects and characteristics, such as the size or the use you are going to make of it. Something you must also take into account is the question of weight. Therefore, in this post we are going to analyze how much a paddle surf board weighs and how it affects its behavior.

How much does an inflatable paddle surf board weigh?

The weight of an inflatable SUP board is a determining factor when choosing which paddle surf board to buy. Both its maneuverability in the water and the load to be carried out of it will depend on it. And in inflatable boards, this aspect is very important because all that weight is stored in a backpack with the rest of the accessories.

Being light is an advantage to carry it from one place to another and when paddling. That is why it is key to know how much a paddle surf board weighs before buying it, so that it is not uncomfortable or difficult to steer in the water. However, the weight varies depending on the type of board you choose.

SUP weight

Allround boards are the most versatile SUP model. They can be used in different scenarios, so they must offer an intermediate weight. In this case, it ranges from 9 kg to 15 kg. HUIIKE boards fall into this category, with a weight of 9 kg, making them light and easy to transport.

Other variants, such as the SUP Race boards, which are oriented to reach high sailing speeds in competition, are equally light. Their weight ranges from 10 kg to 14 kg. Touring boards, which are also the largest type of board, range from 12 kg to 18 kg, while SUP Surf boards are lighter, with weights starting at 5 kg or 6 kg.

Factors influencing weight

What makes a paddle surfboard heavier or lighter? Several factors depend on this, the most common being the size of the board, the material it is made of or the accessories it has. And to this we must add the fact that it is inflatable or rigid.

The way they are constructed also affects how much a rigid paddle surfboard weighs, making them heavier than inflatable models. This is because they are usually made of polyurethane foam with a fiberglass and epoxy resin coating. Inflatable boards, on the other hand, include other types of materials, usually PVC.

In our case, HUIIKE paddle surfboards are made with "Dropstitch" composite, which consists of the union of two panels by thousands of polyester threads. This construction technology provides density and rigidity to the SUP, maintaining its shape when inflated. On the outside we find an airtight military-grade PVC coating with a double side layer that provides durability during use.

The weight of the board is also influenced by its size. Larger SUPs are generally heavier, while lower and narrower models have a lower weight. If you want to know more about how much a paddle surf board measures, here we leave you this article with detailed information.

And finally, the accessories included in the board. These are components that are attached to the paddle board, such as the fins, the fastening rings, the elastic straps or the cell phone holder. All these elements add weight, which is why at HUIIKE we have designed and manufactured them from lightweight materials.

How does weight affect a SUP board?

Apart from knowing how much a paddle surf board weighs, you may also want to know that the heavier it is, the lower its performance and maneuverability in the water. This makes both users who are just starting out and those who are going to compete or want a board for the waves prefer a lightweight SUP. And the experience in the water will always be more satisfying as we have more control over the board.

Although the heaviest boards are also the most stable, their use requires a little more experience, so they are not recommended if you are just starting out in this water sport. In addition, this type of boards are more oriented to a specific use, such as SUP Touring, where what you are looking for is to make crossings or to travel long distances with the greatest possible stability.

On the other hand, carrying an inflatable paddle board that is very heavy is a bit of a hassle. Keep in mind that you have to get in and out of the water, and also store it, so it's best if it's a lightweight paddle board that makes it easier to transport and store.

pressure gauge

How many kilos of pressure does a paddle surf board carry?

Speaking of kilos, do you know what is the inflation pressure of a paddle surf board? The pressure varies depending on the size of the board and the compound it is made of. HUIIKE paddle surfboards should be inflated up to 15 PSI (1 bar/1 kg) for best performance.

Note that the pounds of pressure depends on the board. Larger models will accept a higher pressure than smaller ones. We recommend that you evaluate what is the pressure recommended by the manufacturer to avoid over-inflating the board, something that could affect its integrity and even cause a puncture. Here we explain how to fix it with the repair kit included.

How long does it take to inflate a paddle surf board?

If you want to find out how long it takes to inflate a paddle surfboard, it depends on the liters of air, the pressure and the type of inflator you are using. In reality, it's a very simple process that should take you between 5 and 10 minutes. To inflate an inflatable paddle surf board, follow the steps below:

  1. Connect the hose to the manual inflator port. Then connect it in the "Inflate/Out" mode to inflate the board.
  2. Attach the end of the inflator hose to the valve on the board by turning it clockwise until it locks.
  3. Place the inflator cap by turning it clockwise to facilitate the first phase of inflation.
  4. Start inflating the board by raising and lowering the inflator mast.
  5. The inflator needle will begin to move when you store at least 7 PSI. When you reach this pressure, remove the inflator cap to make this last stretch easier.
  6. Continue to inflate the board until the needle reads between 12 PSI and 15 PSI, the ideal pressure range for best stability. Do not inflate the board more than 15 PSI.
  7. Remove the end of the inflator by turning counterclockwise and put the valve back in place.
